Hi! I’m pastry chef Kimberly Mayer
Many of my best tricks were learned beneath Grandma Millie’s apron while growing up in New Jersey, before I spent several years honing my craft out west in the San Francisco dining scene. But I’ve found my home and my calling in the best small town there is— Hillsborough, NC!
When I first arrived in NC, my online pastry business, You Knead This Pie, allowed me to be our town’s local pastry connection. It’s been a honor to bake so many delicious sweets over the years for your birthday parties, weddings, holiday celebrations, anniversaries and more, while also offering my desserts on the menus of Churton Street dining spots past & present such as the Wooden Nickel, James Pharmacy, Bona Fide Sandwich Co., and LaPlace Louisiana Cookery. I’ve been so grateful for the continued support of my community— providing sweets + treats to Hillsborough & beyond is an honor and a privilege.
In September 2020, through a unique partnership with The Wooden Nickel Pub, I opened my first-ever retail bakery, Kim’s Bake Shop! Deep within the basement of our shop, the pastry wizards and I keep ourselves busy whipping up cakes & pies, our ever-popular donuts, a changing array of freshly-baked pastries, savory snacks, and custom cake orders. Using high-quality raw ingredients, traditional baking methods, and seasonal and local products, my continued mission is to bring friends & families together over delicious handmade desserts.
In our bake shop we proudly offer coffee service from our friends at Carrboro Coffee Roasters(who we’ve collaborated with to create an exclusive and yummy Bake Shop Blend!), as well as retail offerings from small local vendors. And the back of our space is the home of Wooden Nickel Bottle Shop, where you can count on a curated selection of craft beers and small-producer wines.
